BIM Modeling and Revit

Clients, architects, building and technical engineers, design consultants… who benefits from Revit?

The global construction industry is moving towards 3D modeling of buildings rather than 2D drawing.

AutoCAD, the software traditionally used by architects, is increasingly being abandoned in favour of 3D BIM modeling tools, so the question must be asked - what are the true benefits and strengths of using software such as Revit?

Revit: saves times and reduces the factors for error

Revit makes it possible to create intelligent 3D models of building projects. The key advantage is that it provides lots more information about the site and the building design than any other solution. This can be in the form of a short film, a list of materials, an inventory or cost calculations. In turn this helps to save time, reduces the factors for error and provides automation of many tasks, such as the production of plans, elevations and sections. It used to take several days just to draw one section, now with Revit this task can be completed in a matter of minutes and usually without any errors.

Revit: risk prevention, support in the decision-making process and controlling efficiency

By modeling all the elements of the building design in 3D, the Revit software takes into account all the details, junctions and facades throughout the whole project design, as opposed to a 2D drawing tool where only key areas are selected to be represented. This process automatically identifies any unexpected details and inconsistencies that may arise. These discrepancies can be addressed immediately and so the risk of error in the project long term is greatly reduced.

Furthermore, when a specific question arises with regards to the design, with all the information that Revit provides, it is relatively straight forward to analyse and facilitate the decision-making process as to the best solution, which in turn improves the effectiveness and efficiency of the design team.

The benefits of Revit do not just apply to the design stage. Throughout the various project phases and even after completion, having a 3D model of the entire building enables the identification of potential problems more easily and to understand better the impact of the occupants and therefore control more effectively the building's efficiency over the long term.

Revit: the trade off in terms of the initial investment

Revit has many advantages, not least by helping to make design decisions easier and faster, and thereby reducing the risk of error as well as saving time in the long term.

However using Revit does require a large initial investment of time when setting it up and in the training of the team. It requires a complete change to the manner of working. Right from the design phase, clients also need to become accustomed to working with more detailed and better resolved project information, not the 2D presentation format as was previously the case.

As a result of this investment in Revit, clients benefit hugely from the strengthened efficiency and improved overall effectiveness between the various parties involved in the project. This in turn improves the profitability of a project over its duration. The initial sum invested will continually allow for savings to be made throughout the various phases of different architectural projects, making it a win-win situation for everyone involved, clients, architects, engineers, consultants alike.
