Hôtel Rivoli, Paris

Mise en conformité d’un hôtel situé dans le Marais à Paris

Reid Brewin Architects recently intervened on behalf of a small hotel in the Marais area of Paris, wishing to know more about the new rules and regulations coming into force with regards to disabled access and the implications this had for their property and business.

This new legislation came into place from January 2015 regarding all buildings with access to the public. The principal concern from the client was that the new rules would require a substantial revision of the layout of the hotel.

The client asked us to work with them in finding solutions that enabled them to be compliant with the regulations but without having to undertake an extensive reconstruction and refurbishment of the entire hotel.  Our task was to compile a case to obtain an exemption from some of the new rules. However we have also proposed some essential alterations to improve the disabled access throughout the hotel and this work is ongoing.

Improving the accessibility of facilities for the disabled

The focus of the work to improve the accessibility of the hotel facilities was centred on the stairs, doors and ramps. For example, integrated risers and tactile studs were added to the stairs to help the visually and hearing impaired, handrails were incorporated into the staircases, doorways widened and emergency exits reviewed.

New disabled access standards improve the hotel service overall:

A large room on the basement floor, previously the old wine cellars, is used as the breakfast room. By replacing the old staircase and significantly improving the access, this space has been transformed into a coffee bar, open to the public as well as hotel residents. It is also available for seminars. Accessibility to a small courtyard is now possible to all guests and visitors having altered the external joinery of the entrance to be flush with ground level.

The final application was recently submitted to the relevant administrative authorities following the completion of these works and we are awaiting the official confirmation that the hotel is now compliant with the new disabled access legislation.
