Albert Camus School in Fréjus

Lycée Albert CamusAlbert Camus School in Fréjus

Sir Norman Foster & Partners won a competion in 1991 for the design and construction of a secondary school in Fréjus.

The building is more than 200m long and was one of the first 'green' buildings. It was designed without air conditioning, using natural ventilation and a system of solar gain management with a double skin roof containing a ventilated layer of air.  The thermal mass of the concrete was also used in the management of the internal condiditons.  A central axis going all the way along the building is naturally ventilated by a chimney effect where air is naturally drawn out at high level and pulled through the class rooms.

Alex Reid participated in the construction of the project from 1991 to its completion in 1993 as Director of Foster + Partners in France.  He managed a team of 18 people in their office in Nîmes.
