Reid Brewin Architects was appointed by Nike to provide the technical design and to undertake responsibility for the fit out of their new flagship store at Quatre Temps shopping centre at La Défense, just outside Paris. The concept for this new retail store offers the customer a unique brand experience of the leading international sportswear company.

Specific regulations in terms of the architecture for this type of public access building

This type of large retail space that is fully open to the public must meet specific requirements and constraints, particularly in terms of fire safety and disabled access. An Interior fit-out application for public access buildings must be made and approved by the local authorities.

For clients who are unfamiliar with the local regulations, especially those clients based outside of France, as was the case here with Nike in the United States, this process can be confusing and create additional complexity to their project. Our extensive experience in retail design in France and the expertise of the bilingual team at RB-Architects is hugely beneficial to the client in understanding and working through the administrative procedures to obtain approval of a fit-out application by the necessary authorities.

Architectural project in a shopping centre

In large shopping centres, regulatory requirements can be quite complex. The landlord of the property will often closely follow the project in order that the design concept maintains the required level of quality and that it is in keeping with their vision for the retail environment. At Reid Brewin Architects we have recognised experience and expertise in the conception, construction and completion of retail design projects, especially regarding the controls and technical constraints that must be adhered to in shop and boutique design.

One of the complexities of this project was each stakeholder had to validate the project, i.e. the client, the landlord and all consultants concerned with the safety issues. The architectural solution had to fully satisfy everyone involved. One inherent difficulty was the numerous service pipes and ductwork that crisscrossed the space above the sales floor area. A suitable solution was incorporated into the concept and validated by the landlord.

Coordination of the project in English and French, a principal asset

The key in managing this project successfully lay in our ability to coordinate with the Nike teams based in the United States and the design team, construction consultants and contractors who were based in France. This sometimes necessitated shift work and late night conference calls to integrate the time zone difference but this specificity of coordinating bilingual international projects is one of the principal assets that Reid Brewin Architects multicultural team can offer.

Following the successful completion of the project, our architectural team has been selected again by Nike to design and undertake the coordination of the construction works on their high profile new Brand experience store at the Les Halles shopping centre in Paris. Les Halles is currently undergoing a huge redevelopment and restructuring project due to be completed in 2016.
