LEED and BREEAM Accreditation

December 2012 at our Architectural Practice

Anxious to design buildings that respect the environment, Reid Brewin Architects recognize the importance of being up to date with the latest environmental performance and energy efficiency standards. We aim to build all of our projects in France to RT 2012 (2012 Thermal Regulations). We also comply with LEED, BREEAM and HQE standards as required.

LEED certification

Reid Brewin Architects employ LEED certified architects. Set up by the Green Building Council, LEED certification is obtained after passing a training course and a final exam. Identified by initials AP for Accredited Professional (licensed professional), architects benefitting from this certification are authorized to certify buildings according to LEED criteria. The LEED certification for buildings is based on the integration and control of three topics: environmental, social and economic. This is a process that often costs a little more in the design phase and construction but then pays for itself by energy gains.

BREEAM certification

BREEAM is an assessment of the environmental performance of the project similar to LEED. Some of our architects are currently undergoing BREEAM training. Issued following a process of 4 to 5 months, this certification is based on three elements: training (taught in English), a successful exam and a thesis. This accreditation is then used to certify BREEAM buildings anywhere in the world (except in the UK). The method consists of a series of criteria for which points are awarded. The final score determines the level of environmental performance of buildings.

HQE training

RBA architects also follow specific training in HQE (Haut Qualité Environnemental) which is the Frencvh equivalent of LEED and BREEAM. The objective is to design architectural projects that meet these criteria and improve the environmental performance of the buildings that we design. However, for the HQE standard, architects are not authorized to certify a building. This is done by an external organization that works to certify architectural projects developed by architects.
