Sustainable development

In 1987, the World Commission on the environment and the development of the United Nations, in its report “Our Common Future”, defined sustainable development as being “a development which meets the needs for the generations of the present without compromising the capacity of the future generations to answer theirs”.
It is a basic principle of construction which sometimes requires clever thinking to succeed.

The criteria for sustainable development:

  • Control consumption of energy
  • Reduce gas emissions and limit the greenhouse effect (GES)
  • Management of waste
  • Use materials respectful to the environment
  • Safeguard ressources like water, fauna and the flora
  • Analyse micro-economic and macro-economic consequences of the adopted options
  • Social responsibility of corporations
  • Impact of the types of production and organisation used on the health and the wellbeing of individuals

The themes of sustainable development require different ways of thinking. We must renew the architectural gesture and the way in which buildings are designed and built and reconsider our working methods and the organisation of production methods. Different styles of buildings are being created and industry is developing in response to these new criteria.

The choice of high quality environmentally sound buildings is partly a response to the desire of companies to be seen as more respectful to their environment and more in tune with the aspirations of their employees and users, as well as conforming with constantly updating environmental regulations and controls.
